From March 4–8, McMaster University Library is celebrating Open Education Week, a global event to raise awareness about how Open Educational Resources (OER) can help make education more affordable and accessible to learners world-wide.

OER include teaching, learning and research resources, such as textbooks, assignments, modules, and syllabi that are freely accessible, openly licensed and can be used, shared, or repurposed by anyone, anywhere – free of cost, technical, or legal barriers.

The Jamaican Canadian community has honoured McMaster University Library for its commitment to preserving the legacy of one of Jamaica’s most important and beloved cultural icons – Louise Bennett-Coverley, better known as “Miss Lou.”

McMaster University Librarian Vivian Lewis accepted the award, which recognizes the Library’s stewardship of the extensive Miss Lou Archive, at a recent event in Toronto hosted by the Jamaican Canadian Association.

When you hear the term “science communication” children’s books, oral storytelling and graphic novels may not be what immediately comes to mind.

But, with help from artists, storytellers and other experts, McMaster Life Sciences students recently learned to look beyond traditional forms of science communication – like articles and press releases – to explore the power of narrative and try their hand at creating science-based stories of their own.

In 1967, fifty-one years ago this month, the International War Crimes Tribunal concerning the Vietnam War– a private body which had been established a year earlier by Nobel laureate, philosopher and peace activist Bertrand Russell – rendered its latest verdict.

It was a theatre of war unlike any other in World War One.

It was a place where soldiers on both sides were far more likely to be killed by animal attacks or disease, than by enemy fire. A place where battles raged in mountainous jungles so remote that news of the November 11 armistice took days to reach many units, making the soldiers who fought on this front the last in the Great War to lay down their arms.

Throughout her nearly 50-year career, publisher and author Anna Porter has made it her mission to ensure that Canadian stories are told.

From publishing the likes of Margaret Atwood, Farley Mowat, and Margaret Laurence, to her work with publishing giant Jack McClelland, Porter has left an indelible mark on the literary landscape of Canada, cultivating and supporting some this country’s most iconic writers.
