Working at Thode library has exposed Jenna Owen to different experiences and points of view.
As someone who spends a big part of her days at the library, Owen is constantly looking at new books, whether they be related to her classes or simply something she is interested in. She also finds herself conversing with different people every day, especially about possible career paths.
“I have a thesis next year, so taking out books and gathering knowledge has been helpful for me to decide what is really interesting to me,” said Owen. “Talking to the full-time staff is also helpful, it exposes me to different paths because everyone around me has done different things.”
Owen is entering her fourth year of health and society with a specialization in mental health and addiction, while simultaneously completing a minor in environment and society. She has worked as a student assistant at Thode library since September 2021 where her role involves answering patrons’ questions, copying or scanning material that has been requested, and setting holds aside for patrons.
“This summer, I am also part of a team helping out at Thode Makerspace like using the 3D printers and vinyl cutters,” she said. “We are currently making a manual for the vinyl cutter which is really cool and nice for a different experience.”
Helping out at Thode Makerspace has made Owen confident with 3D printing and laser engraving, which she didn't know how to use previously. Now, she uses the creative space for her personal projects as well.
“I laser engraved a few keychains with my favourite artists on it and a few with my pet dog and cat on it,” said Owen. “I also made a 3D printed makeup organizer which is really cool.”
Owen is a huge animal lover and spends much of her free time taking her dog Zena on walks or spending time with her cat Lexi. When she is not doing that, she can be found at the gym, watching the sunset on the beach, or at Bayfront Park with her friends.
“I love taking Zena on hikes and, in the winter, we have spoiled her and bought a nice winter coat and boots for her, which is so funny but cute,” said Owen. “Lexi is always attached to my heel whenever I’m home— she is like my little sidekick.”
Ann Pearce, Thode library manager, says Owen is truly a people person, and that makes her a valued member of the team.
“Jenna’s positive attitude allows her to be open to new challenges such as learning how to use the Makerspace equipment,” said Pearce. “Her warm, approachable personality and her dedication to her duties make it a joy to work alongside her.”
Surrounded by people with different experiences, stories, and opinions encourages Owen to continue trying new things to the best of her abilities.
“I have always been someone that, no matter what, always tries to do my best and I never let anything bother me or hold me back,” she said. “So, don’t be scared to try what you want to try, then what happens, happens.”
Students of summer is a storytelling series from McMaster University Library featuring the student assistants who work in our spaces and provide valuable assistance to patrons during the spring and summer months.
