The William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections is known for its expansive catalogue of rare books and various archives, but the department is also doing important work by preserving contemporary items within its collection. 

In 2024, the university libraries’ archives and research collections began allocating funding to create the Contemporary Chapbooks and Small Press Ephemera Collection. 

Gillian Dunks, collection development archivist at McMaster University Libraries, is responsible for maintaining and growing the collection. 

Did you know that students, staff, and faculty have access to McMaster University Libraries and its resources during the summer? 

"We’re open, and ready to serve the McMaster community,” said Crystal Mills, head of access services. “The university libraries have materials, equipment, and specialized spaces to help with academics, and to encourage users to explore a variety of interests.”

Below are 10 cool things the McMaster community should consider checking out at the university libraries this summer. 

Book displays and collections 

McMaster University faculty and staff members are receiving grants to support projects that will foster the creation and integration of free, high quality open textbooks and course materials to improve teaching and learning. 

Are you looking to work on a digital media project this summer? Lyons New Media Centre has you covered and is equipped with staff and resources to help you with your next media creation. 

Located on the fourth floor of Mills Memorial Library, students, staff, and faculty can access the space Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Fridays from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 

It is much quieter on campus during the summer, but Thode Makerspace remains open and ready to help the McMaster community get creative and learn new skills. 

Located on the lower level of H.G. Thode Library of Science and Engineering, students, staff, and faculty can access the space Monday through Friday from 12-4 p.m. 

McMaster University Libraries have partnered with the McMaster Equity and Inclusion Office to create physical and digital book displays that promote inclusivity and accessibility as part of National AccessAbility Week. 

The annual week has been observed across Canada since 1988. The event is used as a time to reflect on the work being done to create more accessible and inclusive environments, while highlighting the contributions of people with disabilities.
