Meenaa Saththi keeps two things close to her heart: inspiration and curiosity.
As a student assistant at Thode Makerspace, Saththi is constantly inspired by the diversity of people and projects that come in and out of the space. Being able to encourage makerspace visitors and make their visions come to life is meaningful to her.
“The possibilities are limitless,” said Saththi. “This is the space to foster creativity, and when you’re helping, being supportive and engaging with patrons, it really sets an inspiring and passionate energy around the makerspace.”
Saththi, who started working at Thode Makerspace this spring, is entering her third year of engineering physics.
Her job includes ensuring the health and safety regulations at the makerspace are being followed, that patrons have the required training, and that the space stays organized. She also prepares for appointments, ensures the completion of supporting documentation, and creates 3D prints for the makerspace display cabinet that is near the entrance of Thode library.
“A project for the cabinet I finished recently was a levitating clock,” she said. “It requires 3D printing, electronics, and putting them together, so you’re testing a little bit of everything.”
Saththi smiles when she recalls one of the most exciting projects that a patron has come in with.
“Someone was creating a laser cut sign for their friend’s proposal,” she said. “You’re helping a friend, you’re using the resources, and you can get so personalized with it, so it was cute to see.”
When she’s not learning about makerspace or engineering physics, Saththi can be seen learning about everything else.
“I like learning, and there is so much to learn,” she said. “I will go from religion one day, to languages, cinematography, constellations, and recently even bird species.”
Brittany Sostar, Thode Makerspace coordinator, says Saththi is a vital member of the team.
“Meenaa’s eagerness to learn, generosity with sharing knowledge, and willingness to tackle all types of projects has such a positive impact for our team and all who visit Thode Makerspace,” said Sostar. “I am so grateful for all of her contributions and hard work.”
Saththi lives by one saying, which she tells herself and everyone around her.
“Stay open and stay curious, then nothing will stop your vibe," she said.
