John Edward Macfarlane fonds. 1960-1992. -- 2.3 m of textual records, graphic material and sound recordings.
Box 1 Correspondence A-Z 1966-1991 [?]
The Macfarlane correspondence was received in many separate "subject" files, e.g. letters dating from Macfarlane's time at the Globe and Mail were in one file, those from his Saturday Night period in another and Weekend correspondence in another location. To assist researchers in locating material, all correspondence has been listed in a single series, the only exception being internal memoranda and notes relating specifically to particular publications which have been placed in files relating to that publication and may be found following the correspondence in the Administrative series. Thus the researcher seeking to document the relationship between Peter C. Newman and Macfarlane would find the formal correspondence below under "Newman" but would need to examine the Weekend and Macleans files for other relevant material.

Boxes 2,3 & 4 Administrative Files
These files have been organized chronologically to reflect the changes in Macfarlane's working life, and, to some extent; his writing. Commencing with his work for Canadian University Press in the 1960s, this section concludes with Macfarlane's work for C.T.V. in 1991. His early years as a working journalist are well represented by his writing, then, as his career became oriented more towards administration, the papers consist of an increasing number of administrative files.
Correspondence (as distinct from memoranda and other exclusively job-related communications) has been removed and is now located in the alphabetical series above.
