Guild Guitars Inc. Acoustic-electric. Twelve String. Model F212-NT. Serial 51968. 1971. [Used at 2002 show according to fan site.] Can be seen in some 2003 photos at the Mystic Theater.
Martin & Co. Acoustic-electric. Little Martin LX1E. Serial MG 18964. [Looks unused.]
Manzer. Serial 10228. Despite saying “Green Manzer” on the case it is not this guitar, but a different Manzer. Can be seen in numerous photos in the 2000s. Almost any shot of him playing a six-string acoustic is of this one. Has quotations written on the body with silver marker (most have rubbed off with use).
On the back, near the top: "Men are Grown Mechanical in head and heart, as well as in hand
. Their whole efforts, attachments, opinions, turn on Mechanism, in the all importance of physical things, is in every age the common refuge of weakness and blind discontent; of all who believe, as many will ever do, that man's true good lies without him, not within" [Jean-Francois Lyotard. The Inhumans: Reflections on Time. 1991]. On side, to the right, quite worn: "We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects" [Attributed on the guitar to Herman Melville, but actually by the 19th-century Anglican minister, Henry Melvill]. Also on side, in the middle: "The cult of 'systematically pure' market economics can be as dangerous as Marxist ideology, because it comes from the same mental position: that is, from the certainty that operating from theory is essentially smarter than operating from knowledge of life". [Vaclav Havel] On side, around controls, near top. "[There?] is nothing left to lose" and "The swiftest bird flies alone". [This item and the case are on loan until 2026, please contact the archives if you have questions]
