Jo Vellacott fonds. 1st accrual. Ca. 1923 – 2019; predominant 1950 – 2010.
Extent: 2.25m of textual records, 151 photographs, and 55 drawings and paintings.
The Jo Vellacott fonds contains extensive documentation regarding Vellacott’s work as a historian of women, feminism, pacifism, and Bertrand Russell, both as an academic at several Canadian universities, as well as her work as an independent scholar. The fonds contains a significant amount of correspondence, both personal and professional, which spans almost the entirety of Vellacott’s life. Fonds also contains materials relating to Vellacott’s education, particularly her PhD work at McMaster University, and much of her personal and scholarly writings. It also contains materials relating to Vellacott’s Quakerism and involvement with the Thousand Island Monthly Meetings, as well as photographs of Vellacott and paintings and sketches she made.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1935 – 2017
Series consists of both personal and professional correspondence from throughout Vellacott’s life. Significant personal correspondence exists between Vellacott and her children, her then-husband Peter Newberry, and her parents and siblings. Her professional correspondence is chiefly with other academics studying Quakerism, pacifism, women’s history, and Bertrand Russell, including Ken Blackwell, Thomas Kennedy, Peter Brock, and Barbara Roberts. Files have mostly been kept in their original order, with multiple files for individuals being merged.

Series 3: Education and Professional Career, 1939 - 1989
Series consists of materials from Vellacott’s education and professional career, including her schooling at Oxford (BA/MA), the University of Toronto (MA), and McMaster University (PhD). Vellacott would take several post-doctoral fellowships in the United Kingdom, was a Scholar-in-Residence and the Assistant to the Dean of Women at Queen’s University, and was the first full-time, regular faculty member at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute at Concordia University in Montreal. She retired from full-time teaching in 1987.

Series 5: Activism and Quakerism
Series consists of materials from Vellacott’s time as an activist and a Quaker, with much of the activism work being related to her Quaker beliefs. Vellacott was an active member of the Thousand Islands Monthly Meeting in the Kingston area for many years and served in several voluntary administrative capacities for the congregation. In 1992 she participated in the Home Mission and Advancement Committee’s trip to New Zealand with Elly Segal.
