What is McMaster Experts?

McMaster Experts is a research discovery platform that presents a comprehensive portrait of McMaster faculty research activities via web profiles featuring affiliations, educational background, areas of expertise, research interests, and research outputs. It also maps relationships between faculty at McMaster, showing present collaborations and promoting future ones. Visitors can search McMaster Experts by researcher name, research area, or campus group (faculty, department, research centre or institute).

What can I find in McMaster Experts?

McMaster Experts contains profiles for all McMaster faculty including health sciences clinical faculty, faculty affiliated with academic departments, research centres and institutes, other researchers and librarians. Profiles may contain information about faculty research activities, affiliations, educational background, areas of expertise, and research interests.

How is McMaster Experts connected to McMaster Library?

The McMaster Experts service resulted from a collaboration between McMaster University Libraries, Research and High Performance Computing Support, in addition to support from Communications and Public Affairs, and University Technology Services.

What software does McMaster Experts use?

McMaster Experts is a web application that dynamically displays information from McMaster’s instance of Symplectic Elements, a Research Information Management system that pulls information from a variety of authoritative institutional sources as well as from multiple bibliographical sources.

About McMaster Experts Profiles

Whose Profiles are in McMaster Experts?

McMaster Experts provides profiles for anyone at McMaster with a faculty appointment. This includes full-time, part-time, adjunct, and clinical faculty positions within any of the institution's academic departments, or research centres and institutes.

Profiles are created automatically for individuals once they join McMaster. Some profile information is automatically populated, while some requires human input. See below for more information:  

Where does profile information come from?

  • Biographical information (name, email address, position title, departmental affiliations, etc.) come from HR extracts received from the Mosaic Data Warehouse. Extracts are processed every morning to add new individuals and incorporate changes.
  • Publications, other scholarly and artistic works, and selected grant information are provided from the McMaster Research Profile Manager (Symplectic Elements), which harvests information from major bibliographic databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, etc.), as well as publication repositories hosted locally (e.g., MacSphere) and internationally (e.g., arXiv). Anyone with a McMaster Experts profile can log into the Profile Manager to update and add information, as well as enable and configure automatic publication claiming, Learn more in our user guide.
  • Teaching information for registrar-controlled courses originates from Mosaic extracts, which are processed weekly to  provide up-to-date information. If you identify an issue with your teaching information, please contact your Department's timetable representative to correct it through the Registrar's office.

Can non-faculty members have profiles?

Currently, only individuals who have received a faculty appointment at McMaster are eligible for public McMaster Experts profile. Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows are not currently eligible for profiles. 

With appropriate permissions, it is possible for non-faculty to have an account activated in the Experts Profile Manager that can be used to assist with approved administrative activities. McMaster Experts supports the display of a wide range of research contributions and outputs from the Experts Profile Manager. Information in profiles reflects the best-available information about researchers based on their research profiles in bibliometric databases, institutional data sources and researcher-provided information. Please note that the information may have limitations and should be validated with researchers or university officials. The types of research output captured in Experts include, but are not limited to, the following:
