McMaster students have been getting into the holiday spirit by crafting handmade cards for some very special recipients – local seniors.
Ann Pearce, manager at McMaster University Libraries, says it’s clear that students are resonating with the project, as nearly 500 cards have already been submitted.
“A lot of the students live away from home, and are missing their families this time of year,” said Pearce. “They know they have to get over that hurdle of getting through exams, and they understand that some of these seniors could be lonely. I think students can relate to the fact that a small gesture can bring a smile to somebody’s face.”
Tables with supplies such as construction paper, glue sticks, markers and stickers have been set up in Mills Memorial Library and H.G. Thode Library of Science and Engineering, allowing students to take a break from their studying to participate in this initiative.
Some of the heartfelt messaging in cards submitted thus far include:
- “Have the happiest of holidays! You make the world shine so bright! P.S. You look dashing today!”
- “From all of us here at McMaster, happy holidays! We hope you have a wonderful holiday full of love and joy and lots of hot cocoa! Sending much love.”
- “Have the most beautiful holiday season. You are loved by so many more than you know.”
- “I hope you’re spending your holidays nice and warm with the people around you. You are loved and you matter. Lots of love, McMaster students."
- “Thank you for being the heart of the community. I hope this card puts a smile on your face. You’ve paved the way for us with your wisdom, kindness and strength. Your stories inspire us, your laughter brightens our days, and your guidance reminds us to cherish every moment.”
During the pandemic, the university libraries hosted a similar initiative that encouraged students to create cards for seniors who were in isolation or unable to visit with loved ones. The number of cards created this holiday season is nearly triple of what was submitted for the previous initiative.
“The holidays can be a lonely time for many people, especially older adults, in our community,” said Lynne Serviss, associate university librarian, User Services and Community Engagement. “We are so grateful to hundreds of McMaster students who took the time to help make this season a little brighter with their beautiful artwork and heartfelt messages.”
There are two card tables in Mills library. One table is located on the second floor, just outside the learning commons and the other is on the fourth floor in Lyons New Media Centre. In Thode library, the table can be found on the first floor, just past the main entrance.
The last day to create and submit a card is Dec. 16, with cards set to be delivered the following day.
