Series 1
Correspondence. – 1953-1971. – 18.5 cm of textual records.
Series comprises letters sent and received by Lucy Russell. Lucy’s most frequent correspondents included Edith Russell (usually signing letters on behalf of Bertrand Russell), her sisters Anne and Sarah, grandmother Dora Russell (née Black), father John Conrad Russell, Aunt Harriet Barry, school friends, and her boyfriend from 1965-1966, Ahmed Abdi Alaoui. Many of the letters authored by Lucy in this series are in draft form and were unsent.
Letters have been grouped by the processing archivist into files which reflect key correspondents (e.g. Bertrand and Edith Russell) or material types (e.g. received correspondence). Within each file, letters are arranged chronologically. Addressees and dates for each letter are listed below each file.

Series 2
Diaries. – 1956-1971. – 40 cm of textual records; 1 photograph: b&w.
Series comprises diaries created by Lucy Russell. Two terms are used throughout the finding aid to refer to Lucy’s diaries: “diaries” and “pocket diaries.” “Diaries” are journals larger than 7 x 12 cm which contain personal reflections, poem drafts, and notes from Lucy, often not in chronological order. “Pocket diaries” are journals measuring 7 x 12 cm which contain a small amount of space for updates on each day of the year. Lucy tended to use her pocket diaries to record activities or events. Pocket diaries are usually Letts brand (Charles Lett & Co.). “Miniature pocket diaries” are journals measuring 6.5 x 8 cm or less. These were used by Lucy in a similar manner to the pocket diaries; miniature diaries are often from Frank Smythson Ltd. and include a pencil attached to the diary spine.
Diaries are arranged in chronological order by start date.

Series comprises Lucy Russell’s loose notes, prose pieces and poems, and personal reflections. Notes are primarily of a personal rather than academic nature, though some school notes are included. Items of correspondence have been removed by the processing archivist and placed in series 1.
Records were originally loose in boxes; the processing archivist has supplied file groupings, combining materials based on similar composition dates when identification was possible. Files are arranged in rough chronological order by start date.
Where page numbers are indicated for file extents, a “page” refers to one side of a leaf.

Series 4
School records. – 1953-1966. – 1.28 m of textual records.
Series consists predominantly of Lucy Russell’s school notebooks, particularly from her time at Moreton Hall, then an all-girl boarding school in North Shropshire near Oswestry.
Lucy’s earliest primary school years were completed at Kingsmuir School, a boarding school in Sussex. In 1956, when Bertrand and Edith Russell moved themselves and John’s children to Wales, Lucy began attending Moreton Hall (1956-1962, Junior to Upper Fifth Parallel forms). After 1962, Lucy attended Dartington Hall School, a progressive co-educational boarding school in Dartington, near Totnes, Devon. Lucy ceased attending Dartington Hall in 1965, instead focusing on passing her A-level examinations and achieving admission to a university (particularly Oxford or Cambridge), at which she was ultimately unsuccessful. Lucy was not accepted to a university course until 1970; records from this period are not included in the series.
Lucy’s notebooks are typically of a standard size (16.5 x 20.5 cm); most are dedicated to specific subjects. Staples have been removed from all notebooks due to rust.
This series also contains Lucy’s Moreton Hall report cards; Moreton Hall ephemera, including newsletters and performance programs; and loose notes and A-level exam preparatory materials.
Files have been arranged in chronological order.

Series 6
Files arranged by Ray Monk. – 1960-1973. – ca. 23 cm of textual records.
Ray Monk, emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of Southampton, published a two-volume biography of Bertrand Russell (1996, 2000). The second volume, Bertrand Russell: The Ghost of Madness, 1921-1970 (Jonathan Cape Ltd.), concludes Russell’s story with a brief account of the life and death of Lucy Russell (see chapter 14, “The Final Visitation”). While conducting research for the biography, Ray Monk acquired Lucy Russell’s papers from the home of Sian Cooper-Willis, a close friend of Lucy’s who had been entrusted with care of the papers by Lucy herself. Lucy’s papers remained in Sian Cooper-Willis’s home until Ray Monk recovered them, likely in the 1990s.
Ray Monk made selections from Lucy’s unprocessed archive to write chapter 14 of the second volume of the biography. These files, arranged by Ray Monk, are preserved in this series. Ray Monk also utilized other diaries in Lucy’s archive to write the biography, but most of his primary source materials pertaining to Lucy are preserved in this series. Record types include correspondence, notes, poem drafts, and loose diary excerpts.
Monk created chronological files for each year from 1960-1973, all entitled “Lucy.” Items of correspondence are described individually below the file title. Ray Monk’s original order has been preserved.
