Typed description on verso: “The Council room at the Trianon which, owing to the impossibility of heating the great palace, will be used for all the preliminary discussions between the Allies and the Germans. This room was used by the Versailles Council, which determined the conditions of the armistice. It is in the main part of the great palace and is known as the Hall of Mirrors. (Salles des Glaces) It was here that England recognized the freedom of the American colonies in 1783, and it was here that in 1871 William I, King of Prusia, was declared Emperor of Germany, and it was here that the Germans said to the French "Sign here!" And it will be in this hall that the French will experience the poetic justice of repeating those words to the Germans.
