Valerie Tryon was competitor no. 7. The first prize-winner was Lev Vlasenko (no. 48); and the third prize-winner was Lazar Berman (no. 51). Valerie Tryon received an 'hors concours'. One of the Italian jurors, Carlo Zecchi, walked out of the Jury in protest because Tryon was not sent forward to the finals. The Medal awarded to Tryon is stored in Box 5.

PRIVATE RECORDING 
YOUNG VALERIE (aged 7 years). A private recording in which Valerie sings Mendelssohn's 'On Wings of Song', accompanied by her mother Iris Tryon, and plays a study by Stephen Heller. Privately recorded in Leeds in the year 1941, the original 78rps disc was sent to Egypt as a souvenir for Valerie's father who was serving with the Royal Air Force. After enduring some damage across the years it was digitized and placed in the archive. The performance of Mendelssohn's 'On Wings of Song' is spectacular for such a young child, and it is hardly surprising that those in her family circle thought at first she was destined for a singing career. She touches on the matter in her interview for International Piano (see F. 43, Box 4).
 
MUSIC OF THE NIGHT. A recording of a live concert in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Sunday evening, April 13, 2003.
