Laurence wrote in response to an enquiry from Linklater, a student at the University of Winnipeg, about A Jest of God. The letter is full of information about the novel and about Laurence's appreciation of African culture.

This accrual consists of 7 photo albums created by Margaret Laurence. The albums were numbered by Laurence IV to X; albums I to III were not included with the donation. For preservation reasons, the photographs have been removed from the albums but have been arranged in their original page by page order. Scans of the original albums were taken to preserve original layout.
Descriptions have been taken directly from Laurences captions in the album, but have been expanded as necessary by the archivist. Additional notes included in square brackets.

He came to Lakefield in January 1978 to photograph me, and used the instant Polaroid pictures as a kind of first draft in deciding what composition he wanted. He wouldnt let me see them but this one fell on the floor and was left behind. Probably the only Karsh picture of me Ill ever have he didnt volunteer to give me one of the finished ones! Later, however he sent me a copy of his book Karsh Canadians in which a picture of me appears. [Photo was removed from album prior to donation.]

1. Living room, with my two stained-glass windows, and the owl picture that Alan gave me. In left corner is a pine chest, once a cabinetmakers tool chest, some 100 years ago. Colour.

In February, 1979, I spent three days at St. Andrews (private school for boys Grades 8 to 13) having seminar classes with Grades 10 to 13 (NINE classes in 2 days!). My father had attended St. Andrews for part of his High School before World War One. The present Headmaster, Thomas Hockin, very kindly looked up the old records and got me a copy of my fathers record. Note, later entries. My dad must have notified his old school of my birth.
