Finding Aid
Janes, J. Robert (Joseph Robert), 1935-
J. Robert Janes fonds. – 1955-2007. – 12.2 m of textual records and other materials.
Note: Fonds includes ca. 1900 photographs (mostly slides), 5 audio cassettes, and 1 video cassette.
Throughout Janes has recorded many explanatory notes (most notes are dated 2007) concerning the materials, such as dates, storage or shipping arrangements, and other details. These notes are not reflected in the date ranges of the materials themselves. Additional notes by Janes dated Apr.-June 2007 have been placed in the master file. Please inquire with archival staff concerning access to these notes. Much of the writing paper used by Janes throughout had been first used for other purposes, including his own teaching career and also for uses relating to his wife Gracia's work for the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society.

F.35 The Writers’ Union of Canada, 1994, 2 pp. Printed.
Series 3
Correspondence, Memoranda, and Diaries. – [ca. 1969]-2001. – 1.4 m of textual records. – Title from contents of series. Series consists of three sub-series: correspondence; draft correspondence and daily memoranda; and diaries. Included among the diaries are heavily annotated calendars. Series arranged alphabetically by subject.
Correspondence, [ca. 1969]-2001, 94 cm of textual records.
Sub-series consists of incoming and outgoing letters, faxes, e-mails, Christmas cards, invitations, and other types of correspondence. Occasionally envelopes, enclosures, including pamphlets and newsletters, or notes are included. Some outgoing letters were written but never mailed and have been marked as such by Janes. Some letters are addressed to Janes and his wife Gracia. For letters addressed to her alone, see Series 4. Fan mail from Canada and worldwide has been collected at the end of the sub-series. Some correspondence is directed to Rocks and Minerals of Canada, the name of Janes’ mineral specimens business. Items are typescript, carbon copy, computer print, handwritten, photocopied, and printed. Many received faxes were photocopied by Janes, of which only the photocopies have been retained. Forwarded letters, most forwarded to Janes by William Hanna of Stoddart Publishing and Frances Hanna of Acacia House Publishing, have been filed under the names of the original sender. See also Series 1 for correspondence relating to specific books. Some enclosed printed materials have been placed in Series 2 as appropriate.
Original arrangement was chronological; sub-series was re-arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent in June 2006 by archival staff. Items in files have been arranged chronologically from most recent to earliest, and letters from correspondents without last names given have been grouped at the end of the sub-series.

–TO KILL OR NOT TO KILL, see author’s note as it explains things, but from this evolved THE ALICE FACTOR and THE HUNTING GROUND, so here we have “final” in three parts: ONE, TWO and THREE
–Starts of THE HOUSE BY THE WATER, THE SLEEPER, BETRAYAL, THE IRISH STORY Plus one page detail of ONE MAN’S WINTER..I really don’t know if anything further was
saved and then sent on to you but I include it here.
–SPY’S SPY and other stories
you will, I think, already have versions of these but in cleaning out the cupboard I found these, so send them along.
–My file of Film and TV Options–this, I think, is unique as it illustrates completely the agony one goes through. Never again, in so far as I now think.
–my file on the National Library donations made by me over the years. But I still don’t know if they even kept and listed what I most recently sent them. Stephen Harper, to save “money” destroyed my association, and that of others, with the National and I gather it has never recovered. I was so lucky with Madame ..., and then it all simply changed. Sad really.
–Canadian Book Review of Odd-Lot Boys and the Tree-Fort War. I just happened on this when clearing out the cupboard and packing things up.
–here are a number of cards that I would receive and then put on the bookshelves. Let me just try to list them in order as they appear: From: Pierrette and Mau’ Laroche; Steele Curry at Skiathos; Grace R.; Eugenia Berlin; Pierrette and Mau’; Anne Prewit who lived in Walnut Cottage, whose yard is behind ours; Ed and Marcia Hill: Campbell Scott; Campbell Scott; Donald Combe, St. Mark’s Church re Tree Fund to which I donated about $1100 “bottle” money over a coupled of years. I did so to stop them from cutting down all the trees in the graveyard, also gave them $100 to start, and then stopped a tree cutter from taking down a perfectly magnificent Red Oak, a giant I love. The stupid guys had crushed the coffins, so I got the press in droves. Good-oh for me. Three dear old ladies in black were crying their eyes out when I came upon them and the crushing at the end of one of my walks.; Pierrette and mau’; Carra Black in California.; Robin Walz: Sandy re a book I gave her Al; Robin Walz; Carra Black, her Shachan and Kipper); St Mark’s Chirch re tree fund donations; same again; Caroline (I think she was with Orion Books); Bill ?; Robin Walz; Frances Hanna; daughter Cathy; probably from Anne or Cathy; from Cathy; four others from her; son Peter; from Cathy again.
–further emails, cards from Robin Walz,
–then my current email file
Box 170
–this box mainly contains earlier thoughts, reference notes that I had stacked in a pile to left of
my worktable. An accumulation. It begins, though, with notes for Beekeeper dated Tues 16 Dec. 1997.
Is followed by those for GYPSY dated 1 May 1996, FLYKILLER 22 July 1999; then lists of German and French to check.
Then “back working on Gypsy”, 1 May 1996
Then Salamander notes.
Then Sandman (cont’d) 17 Nov. 1994 to Madrigal notes
Then references for Gypsy.
Box 171
–these are the reference notes from the stacks (three or four) that always were piled up in front of me as I wrote the St-Cyr and Kohler books and the “international” thrillers.
We begin here with those for Nightwalker, the 18th which I have decided I had best pack up.
Among them will be found the set I did for Tapestry, as I would always have a look at such as things progressed.
Amongst all there is much about the how and why of writing. Each time, of course, one needs a million things but never knows until needed.
This is especially so because I never plotted out a book ahead of time. Each story grew from that tiny seed or idea, the what if, one always asks.
Box 172
--a continuation of the Reference Notes, the stacks of material that were always there in front of me and always added to as I wrote every new book.
–Throughout, if I felt a note useful, I have added them on the yellow flags.
–The box, however, dos begin with my Nightwalker roughs to 12 October 2017.
–Also ends with notes re Nightwalker.
Box 173
–All the background research for The House By The Water
--My file on the SOE, the Special Operations Executive.
Discard whatever you wish.
– More files and references for St-Cyr and Kohler books and for international thrillers.
–More on SOE
–My French maps (Paris etc.) plus Paris par Arrondissement. Please note that I had found an earlier copy which was extremely useful since street names were continually being changed, also it had far better street maps that the recent copy, which I used just to check things.
–Parting with all of these is, I have to admit, rather very hard on me, but I do think it for the best.
Box 174
After I had packed everything I came across several things for The Druid and the Dancer that I had set aside as reference material for Nightwalker. (Which eventually would have dealt with the St. Cloud Auto Tunnel , in which the Germans had a factory which assembled all of the torpedoes, they then shipped out to the various U-boat centres).
Hence, there are notes, then a xerox of the Folies-Bergère and some notes of SOE.
This is followed by The Celts (a xerox), Sutton Hoo, and a bit on making hemp. Again all reference.
File most of these with The Druid and the Dancer, Box 3, the Celts with Timeweaver (as background), and the SOE material with Box 13, my file on the SOE.
