Finding Aid
Charlotte Gray fonds. 1st accrual. – 1978-2017. – 5.8 m of textual records and other material.
This accrual is arranged into the following series:
Series 1: Writing. – 1978-2016. – ca. 5.4 m of textual records and other material.
Series 2: Appearances and Lectures. – 2004-2017. – 30.5 cm of textual records and other material.
Series 3: Personal Records. – 1995, 2011. – 2 videocassettes (VHS) and other material.
Series groupings and file arrangement have been supplied by the processing archivist following functional analysis and assessment of the received order of the files.
Series 1
Writing. – 1978-2016. – ca. 5.4 m of textual records ; 490 photographs : b&w and col. ; 27 floppy disks (3.5”) ; 7 CD-ROMs ; 2 DVDs ; 3 videocassettes (VHS).
Series contains records related to Charlotte Gray’s writing career. Records of Gray’s non-fiction books comprise the bulk of the series, from her first biography, Mrs King: The Life and Times of Isabel Mackenzie King (1997), to The Promise of Canada (2016). The series also includes a small selection of records from Gray’s early journalism career, particularly her contributions to New Statesman, a UK magazine, in the 1980s and Saturday Night (Canadian), where she served as an editor from 1986-1993. Records attest to Gray’s research, writing, and promotional activities (interviews, book tours, festival appearances), as well as the adaptation of some of her volumes for television (Sisters in the Wilderness for CBC in 2003; Gold Diggers for the US Discovery Channel in 2014; and Gold Diggers for a 2014 PBS documentary).
The processing archivist has maintained all correspondence in its original files, as Gray often interfiled her correspondence with research notes, manuscripts, and the like. Significant correspondents have been noted at the file level. Key persons include: Phyllis Bruce, Canadian editor and founder of a Simon & Schuster imprint; Dr. Sandra Campbell, former faculty member of the Pauline Jewett Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at Carleton University; and Dr. Duncan L. McDowall, Professor Emeritus and University Historian at Queen’s University. These individuals—particularly Campbell and McDowall—routinely provided Gray with editorial notes on her manuscripts. Handwritten annotations are the norm across all manuscripts; the processing archivist has identified the editor when it was apparent, but in most instances where the author of annotations is not noted, the handwriting is Gray’s.
Records related to Gray’s non-fiction monographs are grouped according to publication; publications are arranged chronologically. Records from Gray’s early journalism career are included at the end of the series. This arrangement corresponds to the received order of the files.
Record types include: research files; correspondence; computer printouts of manuscripts; some digital versions of manuscripts and research files (on floppy disks); photographs (mostly copies of photographs held by various archives, particularly Library and Archives Canada); and video recordings of Gray’s promotional interviews or televised adaptations of her works.
