F.1 B&W photographs, arranged in envelopes. Photographs marked “from Leona” were given either to ST by her cousin, Don Galloway, when he cleaned out their aunt Leona Galloway’s house in 2015 or were given by Leona herself at some earlier date.
Canada, 1941:
Envelope A
A-1, Don with his mother, Frances, and brother Bruce, in the summer of 1940 when they were in the Reserves; written on verso in Don’s hand, “464889 ACW Ferguson, No. 2 Hostel Waaf section, RAF section, Bournemouth, Hants.” 5.5 cm x 10.2 cm. This indicates he took this photograph with him when he went overseas.
A-2, Don in uniform, wearing beret with CAC (Canadian Armoured Corps) badge, autumn, 1941. In one photograph he is wearing an overcoat, 5.9 cm x 10.3 cm; in the other photograph a lanyard is visible looped through one pocket, 5.5 cm x 9.9 cm.
A-3, Don in uniform in unidentified room; 20 CATC pennant on wall; wireless badge visible on arm, 6 cm x 8.5 cm.

A-5, Christmas leave in Schumacher, 1941-42. Four photographs. 1, Don in uniform standing in front of the McIntyre Gold Mine Shaft Headframe, 7.5 cm x 5.2 cm. 2, Don in uniform standing in front of a log cabin holding a bottle of liquor; a second bottle is tucked into his pants pocket and the top of a third can be seen peaking out of his top pocket, 8.7 cm x 6.1 cm. 3, Two prints of the same photograph. Don appears as in number 2 but this time he is leaning against a shed. On the verso of one is written in ink “Don Galloway, Schumacher. Jan/42”, in pencil “from Leona Galloway” in ST’s hand, 9.6 cm x 7 cm; the other print measures 8.5 cm x 6 cm.
A-6, Furlough in Sault Ste. Marie, Feb. 1942. Four photographs. 1, Don with his brother Gordon, both in civilian clothes. Gordon has written in faint pencil “Don and Gordon Feb. 42” and “I printed these snaps myself on non-glossy paper”. Don has written in ink “188212 L/C Shaw, 50 Kings End, Ruislip, Mddx, Ruislip 3646”, 8.4 cm x 6 cm. 2, Don in civilian clothes beside the Weymss Street house, noted as “from Leona”, 10 cm x 6.3 cm. 3, Two prints of the same photograph. Don, in uniform walking behind the Weymss Street house. Both are marked “from Leona”, 10 cm x 6 cm, 7.7 cm x 5.7 cm.

United Kingdom, 1942-1944:
Envelope B: Sgt. John Shineton, 8.7 cm x 6 cm. Don with two other members of his tank crew, 9 cm x 6.5 cm. Don is on the bottom right, beside W.E. Mitchell. John DeLory is standing behind Don. The other three are not identified.
Envelope C: Don with Kathleen McCardle, 8.7 cm x 5.9 cm. Also in this envelope is what remains of the tie clip Kathleen gave Don.
Envelope D: Don, portrait, 12.7 cm x 8.8 cm, wearing Fort Garry Horse cap badge. On the verso written in pencil is “Bookmark” and underneath that “Sheila” and several unconnected words. It measures 13 cm x 8.5 cm.
Canada, 1944-45
Envelope E: Don, on board the Lady Nelson hospital ship with other soldiers, taken by the Canadian Army, in Halifax, Sept. 1945, 14.9 cm x 19.9 cm. This photograph was placed in a frame. The frame backing contains the following information: “Troup Ship (Hospital) Lady Nelson Coming Home Sept. 1944. Arrived Sault Ste. Marie Sept. 19th 1944; Don Galloway, 3rd from left”.

Envelope H: These consist of before and after photographs to illustrate the extent of injuries sustained in 1944. All photographs submitted are marked with Don’s name, serial number, the date taken and the notation “return to: Sheila Turcon, 45 Hillmer Rd., Cambridge (G), Ont.” All b&w except those noted as colour.

F.2 Olney C. (Jack) Barker:
B&w photographs. Jack in Philippine Islands, 15 June, 1945. 5.9 cm x 4.2. Jack, in uniform, with his first wife, Sue, n.d. 8.1 cm x 5.7 cm. Also in file: (1) A letter to Don’s parents, Jack’s Aunt Flossie and Uncle Jack, written after the death of his wife Sue. The letter was a V-mail document, a method used by the U.S. military to save bulk. The letters were microfilmed, reels of microfilm were sent from the Pacific, then each letter was developed and posted in the United States. There is also an envelope addressed to Leona Galloway, Don’s sister and Jack’s cousin, from the same address in San Francisco as the letter. (2) News clipping with Jack’s photograph, captioned “Sgt. Olney C. Barker”. The text reads: “Now in New Guinea is Sgt. Olney C. Barker, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Donnelly of Tone”. (3) Funeral programme, 26 June 1972.

F.3 Canada, Army Signalling certificate, noting attendance from 28 April to 5 June 1930; signed by the Commandant, Royal Canadian School of Signals, dated 26 August 1930. 25 cm x 34 cm.
F.4 Dominion of Canada Registration Certificate, 1940. It provides the following information: Electoral District, No. 124, Polling Division, 147, Lincoln, Niagara Camp, Donald F. Galloway, residing at 41 Wemyss Street, Sault Ste. Marie, 15 August 1940. There are two copies of the certificate, one handwritten, the other typed. Each one is signed by a different Deputy Register. Don’s signature only appears on the handwritten document. The handwritten one is stamped on the verso: 1944 and 1945. The typed one is stamped duplicate, 10 Nov. 1944. Handwritten, 6.4 cm x 9.5 cm; typed, 7.1 cm x 10.3 cm.

F.11 Canadian Pension Commission, correspondence and documents re disability pension. (1) Letter, 8 Jan. 1945, awarding a 35 % disability because of “multiple gunshot wounds of your head, face, neck, arms and chesty resulting in corneal ulcer with cataract and defective vision with much facial scarring.” Note: This is not an accurate description of Don’s injuries. (2) Form, ts. carbon, with the amount of $26.25 monthly, 22 Jan. 1945. (3) Form Letter, 17 Feb 1945, listing “multiple G.S.W. head face, neck, arms, chest, with corneal ulcer (left). (4) Form, 19 Mar. 1945, listing amount of $26.25.
