Ryan then began her journey in non-fiction with her first novel, Dark Fire (Ironing Board Press, 2021), where she recounts the true story of two farming families who were horrifically massacred in the violent struggle for a tobacco growers union in 1920s Kentucky. The book was shortlisted for the Hamilton Literary Award in 2022 and a Whistler Independent Book Award. In 2023, she released her second non-fiction novel, The Arithmetic of Color (Ironing Board Press, 2023), which tells the true story of Tom Johnson, a Graves County man of mixed race whose life put him at the center of the American experience.
