Students enrolled in CMST 3DG3 (Digital Storytelling) will present their final audio-visual digital stories in a hybrid exhibition hosted by the Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship (Mills Library, McMaster University) titled ‘Call to Action.’ In their projects, students focus on one social justice issue of their choice and develop 5-minute digital stories inviting audiences to act in ways that contribute to addressing the challenge.
CMST 3DG3 conceptualizes digital storytelling as a tool for activism. Concepts covered include hegemony, counter hegemony, storytelling, and counter storytelling. In this hands-on class, the emphasis is on using accessible technologies, such as open-source software, mobile phones, tablets, and laptops in the production of different kinds of digital stories. Transferrable skills students get from the course include communication skills, critical thinking skills as well as audio and video editing skills.
