Historical Notes
The Church of St. John the Evangelist, Thorold, although built as early as 1853-1856, is the third building in which Thorold Anglicans have worshipped. The first building, known as The German Meeting House, was a log structure erected in the 1790s. This was followed, in 1832, by a small stone church known as St. Peter's.
The first resident rector in the Niagara district was the Reverend Robert Addison who arrived in 1792 at Niagara-on-the-Lake, under the auspices of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in England. He extended his ministry to numerous distant points including Thorold. Many of Addision's congregation in Thorold were not originally Anglican, but Lutheran. These German immigrants brought no pastor with them but, as the Anglican services were so like their own, they gratefully accepted Mr. Addison's ministrations. It was they who erected the log building known as The German Meeting House. St. Peter's Church was located on almost the same site.
In 1817 the Reverend William Leeming became rector of Holy Trinity Church, Chippawa, and in 1821 began conducting services on a more regular basis in Thorold. Subsequently, clergy from St. George's Church, St. Catharines ministered in Thorold prior to the appointment of the Reverend Thomas Brock Fuller as the first Rector of St. John's in 1840. The adopted son of the Reverend William Leeming and Mrs. Leeming of Chippawa and a godson of Sir Isaac Brock, he was largely responsible for the erection of the present church. He had underwritten the cost of the building and when he left Thorold in 1862, he forgave the remaining considerable debt still owing him. After serving as Rector of St. George's Church, Toronto, and Archdeacon of Niagara, Fuller was elected the first Bishop of Niagara when this area of the Dioceses was separated from the Diocese of Toronto in 1875.
Until 1908 St. John's, Thorold, and St. Paul's, Port Robinson, made up a two point parish. However, the rector resided in or near Thorold.
A parish hall was constructed in 1924, named "Memorial Hall", in memory of the Thorold men who fell in the first Great War. In 1961-62 extensive additions and improvements were made to the building. Major renovations to the Church were not uncommon through the years and in 1967, Canada's Centennial, an extensive program of restoration was carried out with Peter John Stokes as consulting restoration architect.
