St. George's Anglican Church (Harriston, Ont.) fonds. -- 1858-1969. -- 20 cm of textual records.
Harriston is located in Minto township. Rev. John Smithhurst provided missionary services to the residents of Minto, beginning in 1858. In 1870 Rev. Arthur Boultbee, who lived in Harriston, was appointed to provide missionary services. It was under his direction that St. George's was built. The Church was consecrated in 1879. For many years St. George's was served by the same rector as the Church of the Ascension in Clifford, Ont. and Christ Church in Drew, Ont. The fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records, services, Vestry minutes, financial accounts, and other documents. Most of the fonds has been microfilmed.
Title based on content of fonds.
Fonds on deposit. Ownership of fonds resides with St. George's Church.
Finding aid available in hard copy and electronically.
Researchers are requested to use the microfilms. They must also sign an agreement of use form.
Further accruals are expected.
Historical Notes
St. George's Church, Harriston was in the early years part of the mission of Minto. The records for this church begin with the mission records in 1858.
St. George's Church (Harriston), the Church of the Ascension (Clifford), and Christ Church (Drew), were all served by the same rector and the records are joint for the most part.
In 1946 the rector of St. George's began to also serve St. John's Church, Farewell. The records were kept separately for each church, with the occasional exception.
In August 1968, the rector of St. Paul's Church, Mount Forest, began to serve St. George's Church are in the St. Paul's Church Registers.
N.B. Parish Register B (pg. 7) states that "Aug. 20, 1894 began registration of St. George's congregation - Harriston."
