St. George's Anglican Church
St. George's Anglican Church (Hamilton, Ont.) : St. Andrew-in-the-Vale Church (Dundas, Ont.) fonds. -- 1893-1987. -- 93 cm of textual records and graphic material.
In the summer of 1889 the Bishop of Niagara and the rector of All Saints' Church recognized the need for church services further west than Queen St. South where All Saints' was located. It was decided to erect a chapel-of-ease west of Locke Street. Property was obtained at the corner of Tom and Sophia Streets (Sophia was later renamed Strathcona Avenue). St. George's chapel was opened for service on 30 October 1890. In 1902 an addition to the building was constructed, and St. George's church was re-opened and dedicated on 9 November of that year. In 1911 a parish hall was erected. Other improvements were made to the Church in the mid-1920s, including the installation of stained glass windows in the chancel in 1926. The church was closed and, in 1995, the property sold to Hamilton Christian Fellowship.
From the early days of the twentieth century, services were also held by members of St. George's Church and others at St. Andrew-in-the-Vale, a mission church on Old York Road in Dundas, Ont. A new church was built on that site and opened in 1955. The final service took place at St. Andrew-in-the-Vale in December 1970. The fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records, services, Vestry, Parish Council and Women's Auxiliary minutes, Sunday School Teachers and Brotherhood of St. Andrew records, legal and other documents. Most of the fonds has been microfilmed on 5 reels, numbered 309-313.
Title based on content of fonds.
Fonds on deposit. Ownership of the fonds resides with St. George's Church.
Finding aid available in hard copy and electronically.
Researchers are requested to use the microfilms. They must also sign an agreement of use form.
Further accruals are expected.
