Fonds - Brief Description
St. Andrew's Anglican Church (Grimsby, Ont.) fonds. -- 1796-2005. -- 1.3 m of textual records.
The first log church at Grimsby was built by United Empire Loyalists in 1794, with services provided by visiting missionaries. The present stone church was built in 1819, replacing a frame one which had been completed in 1804. The first rector was Rev. William Sampson who took up his post in 1817. Fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records, services, Vestry, Parish Council, Women's Guild, Junior Auxiliary, Women's Auxiliary, Young People's Association, Upper Canada Bible Society, Layman's Association, and Chi Rho Fellowship minutes, financial registers, and correspondence. Most of the fonds has been microfilmed on 8 reels of microfilm, numbered 121-126, 135-136.

Historical Notes
The first log church at Grimsby was built by the community of Empire Loyalists in 1794 on land donated by Col. Robert Nelles. The area was served by visiting missionaries in the early days, the first of them, the Rev. Robert Addison, coming the 40 mile distance from Niagara after 1792. The present stone church was being erected in 1819 when of one of the most prominent members of the community, Andrew Petit, died, and it was decided to name the church St. Andrew's, in his memory. This building replaced a frame structure which was completed in 1804 and had been located in the southwest corner of the present burial ground. The first settled minister of the parish was the Rev. William Sampson, established there in 1817, a year after the first minister was settled in Ancaster. In 1820 there were only five Church of England clergymen in the Niagara district, the other three being at Niagara, Chippawa and Queenston. The Rev. Sampson began to keep regular records of births, marriages and deaths from 1817 onwards, but the earliest church register is a record of marriages performed by Robert Kneels, J.P., from 1796 onwards when there was no minister available.
