St. Alban the Martyr Anglican Church fonds (Acton, Ont.). -- 1881-1982. -- 40 cm of textual records.
In 1845, the year in which a Post Office was established at Acton, ministration was provided by clergy from St. George's, Guelph, and then Rockwood, with services held in the Old Temperance Hall. A church was built in 1872 and consecrated on 4 July 1876 by the first Bishop of Niagara. See the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary Booklet, 1872-1947, for a more complete history.
The fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records, Vestry, Finance Committee Advisory Council and St. Alban's Guild minutes and financial records. Some financial records have been retained at Niagara Church house. Most of the fonds has been microfilmed on 4 reels, numbered 270-273.
Title based on content of fonds.
Fonds on deposit. Ownership of the fonds resides with St. Alban the Martyr Church.

Researchers are requested to use the microfilms. They must also sign an agreement of use form.

Historical Notes
The first ministrations of religion to Church of England settlers in Esquesing Township were those of the Reverend Adam Elliot, a travelling missionary whose work extended over a large part of Central Ontario. In 1845, the year in which Adamsville became Action and a Post Office was established, the country is described as almost unbroken bush. For some years Acton was ministered to by Assistant Clergy from St. George's, Guelph, and then Clergy from Rockwood, services being held in the Old Temperance Hall. The Mission included congregations at Acton, Rockwood, Erin, Eramosa, Hillsburg and Garafraxa. In the same year the Church was built in Acton and named after Saint Alban, the first British Martyr. In 1875 the Diocese of Niagara was formed, and the next year on July 4th, the first Bishop of Niagara, T.B. Fuller, consecrated the Church.
