Church of the Good Shepherd Anglican Church

In "The First 100 Years", an historical booklet of the Church of the Redeemer, Stoney Creek, it is recorded that "with the growth in the area and the number of children attending Church School, the Gartrell family, devoted church workers at Redeemer, undertook the responsibility of conducting a Sunday School on Barton Street. On June 26, 1922 the Mission of the Good Shepherd was officially opened as part of the Parish of Stoney Creek. By 1923 the Mission had its own vestry, but continued to be mothered by Redeemer."

In 1933 a three-point parish of Aldershot, Hamilton Beach and the congregation of the Good Shepherd was formed with the Rev. Gruer Luxtion as Rector. Late in 1937 the Church of the Good Shepherd was linked with St. John's, Winona, forming a two-point parish. In April 1953 the first full-time Rector was appointed in the person of the Rev. Edgar S. Bull.

In 1950 a new Parish Hall was dedicated by the Right Reverend Walter E. Bagnall, Bishop of Niagara. It was planned as a basement for a new Church, which was eventually completed and dedicated on December 14, 1961. The original church building was deconsecrated in 1957.

In April of 1965, St. Andrew's-by-the-Lake, Hamilton Beach, was linked with the Good Shepherd, and from April 1, 1977 it formed a two-point parish with St. Alban's, Hamilton.

With declining membership and serious financial difficulties, a feasibility study was conducted in 1984 regarding the practicality of establishing a Multi-Social Service Centre in the Church of the Good Shepherd co-sponsored by the Diocese of Niagara and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton. Following the study , approval was given by the Diocesan Executive to proceed with such a plan, applying to the City of Hamilton for Ontario Neighbourhood Improvement Plan Funds. At a Special Vestry Meeting in November of 1984, the Parish declined to give its approval.

A Service of Thanksgiving celebrating 69 years of Christian Ministry at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Hamilton, was held on January 13, 1991 with the Right Reverend Walter Asbil, Co-adjutor Bishop of Niagara as the Chief Celebrant and Preacher. The final Service was held on January 27, 1991, and the Church was closed.
