Qualitative Data Analysis
Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) is the process of understanding and interpreting non-numerical data throughout the research lifecycle—from data collection and organization to analysis, interpretation, and dissemination. Qualitative data can take many forms such as texts, images, symbols and each type of data often require different methods for its analysis. It is one of the essential components of research methodology in disciplines such as the Social Sciences and Humanities, and can offer nuanced insights, and perspectives.
McMaster Library’s qualitative data analysis service is available to students, researchers and faculty for consultations and assistance with a variety of topics including:
- General consulting on qualitative research design and analysis needs.
- Assistance in developing appropriate qualitative methodologies and selecting appropriate analytical frameworks.
- Advising on issues related to qualitative data organization, coding, and management.
- Assisting with qualitative analysis software. Currently we offer support for open source QDA software such as QualCoder and Taguette.
- Providing instructional workshops for undergraduate and graduate classrooms tailored to specific disciplines and needs. Examples include developing appropriate coding schemes, introduction to specific software etc.
