Library Pets is returning at McMaster University Library just in time for the bustling second half of the fall term.
Each week, McMaster students, as well as faculty and staff, are invited to an informal, virtual drop-in to meet library staff and their pets.
“We know that many students are missing home and their families, and that often includes a pet,” said Nancy Waite, coordinator, library accessibility services and co-lead of Library Pets. “This is an allergy-free way for students to have that connection with a furry, fluffy or even scaly animal friend along with a friendly face of a library staff member.”
Every Wednesday in November from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and each Thursday in December (until Dec. 16) from 1:30 to 2 p.m., McMaster students are invited to join us for a virtual drop-in to meet library staff and their pets.
Sandra Rakovac, library assistant and co-lead of Library Pets, said the response from students over the summer encouraged staff to bring the initiative back.
“Every student left our summer edition of Library Pets with a smile on their face,” said Rakovac. “We are thrilled to offer a free activity that has such a positive impact on our student community.”
Rebecca Tauro, a McMaster student who participated in Library Pets this summer, agreed that the event offered a fun pause from the busyness of everyday life.
“I’ve always loved pets, so to have an opportunity like this was amazing,” said Tauro. “Attending the Library Pets' virtual sessions were the perfect way for me to take a break from my busy schedule and interact with the library staff and their adorable pets. Seeing these pets and hearing their stories surely brightened my day.”
Library Pets is part of McMaster University Library’s ongoing efforts to connect with students and the McMaster community in creative ways.
Lynne Serviss, head, library services, added: “I loved participating in Library Pets with my dog, Judy, and we’ll be back again in November with all her cuteness. Our library services staff are happy to support McMaster students in a variety of ways. Library Pets allows us to offer this support in a creative and fun way.”
