McMaster University Libraries will once again host professional development opportunities this May as part of Teaching and Learning Month, led by the MacPherson Institute.
The annual initiative brings together faculty, instructors, and staff to explore new approaches to teaching and learning, with a focus on strengthening classroom practices and student success.
The MacPherson Institute advances this work through professional development, curriculum design, and teaching and learning scholarship across disciplines.
During Teaching and Learning Month, the libraries aim to equip instructors with tools and strategies that can be applied directly to their teaching.
“When educators are supported in their own learning, it has a direct impact on the student experience,” said Helen Kula, associate university librarian, teaching and learning. “These opportunities ultimately lead to shaping more engaging, inclusive learning environments.”
This year’s sessions led by the libraries reflect the changing needs of educators and span a range of topics.
Learning opportunities will explore support for campus classroom technologies, a new research data management educator’s toolkit, and best practices in designing evidence synthesis-based assessments, alongside workshops on using comics in health sciences education and an introduction to open educational resource (OER) grants for course development.
Jennifer McKinnell, director of the Health Sciences Library, says these opportunities help equip educators as teaching continues to evolve.
“What we’re seeing across health sciences is how quickly teaching is evolving, especially with new technologies and approaches,” said McKinnell. “Creating space for educators to learn from one another helps them keep pace in a way that feels practical and supportive.”
Teaching and Learning Month is made possible by campus partners across the university, reflecting a shared commitment to educational excellence.
