After years structured around classes, assignments, and familiar campus spaces, graduation can bring more uncertainty than expected.
As the class of 2026 prepares for what comes next, a familiar source of support remains available. McMaster University Libraries continues to offer alumni borrowing privileges, access to select digital resources, on-site access to its broader digital collections, and support from library employees.
“Graduation is a major transition, with many students navigating new careers, further education opportunities, and personal goals,” said Lynne Serviss, associate university librarian, User Services and Community Engagement. “Knowing they can continue to rely on the libraries, helps graduates stay connected to a community that is invested in their success long after convocation.”
While remote access to many subscription resources changes after graduation, alumni can apply for access to a curated collection of e-resources, including JSTOR, journals, and ebooks. These resources can support graduates as they pursue further education, research a new field, prepare for a career move, or continue learning outside the classroom.
Alumni can also visit the libraries in person to access the university’s broader digital collections. Employees at the libraries can provide a one-day guest account for on-site database access, helping graduates continue to use many of the research tools they relied on as students.
Crystal Mills, head of Access Services at McMaster University Libraries, says the libraries remain a partner in graduates’ lifelong learning.
“Alumni are an important part of the university community, and we love to see our graduates return to use our spaces and services,” said Mills. “By offering these services, we are empowering alumni to stay curious and engaged in intellectual inquiry beyond their formal education at McMaster.”
