Data Deposit and Retention: Get Readier for Requirements from Funders and Publishers

Are looming requirements for data retention, deposit, and availability getting you down? Or maybe a journal is asking you to deposit your research data and you don't know where to start? Get readier for requirements with this quick, timely webinar.

Data deposit and data sharing are increasingly recognized as best practices to support open research, reproducibility, research integrity, collaboration, and more. In January 2027, the Tri-Agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) are targeted to implement a data deposit and retention requirement for funded projects. Many journals are also asking researchers to share or make data available: BMJ, PLOS, Nature, NEJM, and Frontiers. But what's the best repository to share it in? How do you meet this requirement if you have sensitive or very large datasets?

If you're a researcher, on a research team, a research support staff, or a student with questions about impending requirements, this session is for you. It's also appropriate to bring anyone up to speed on long-term data management for a publication, grant, or project.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Bullet-point their responsibilities under the Tri-Agencies' impending data deposit, availability, and retention requirements
2. Locate an appropriate repository for their dataset.
3. Find RDM consultations and other resources to help them meet requirements.
4. Outline tools to support documentation and metadata best practices, including READMEs, codebooks, and data dictionaries.
