Access Services Student Assistants play a vital customer service role by assisting with questions at the Services Desk, helping with printing, answering directional inquiries, and signing out equipment and books. They process requests for chapter and article scans, retrieve and shelve our materials, maintain the organization of the physical collections, and assist in the closing procedures of the building. Occasionally, Access Services Student Assistants are asked to assist with coverage of other service areas or participate in student outreach activities.

Archives students play a vital role in documenting and preserving the rare and one-of-a-kind collections held at McMaster. Self-paced, your important and detail-oriented work will require focus and careful attention to detail.

The main focus for the Health Science Library (HSL) Student Assistants is customer service, as students work on the front-line answering inquiries and providing general information and assistance with locating library collections and services. Students are also responsible for circulating library materials using our integrated library system, shelving library materials, and ensuring shelves are neat and materials are in call number order. Occasionally, our students are called upon to copy and scan library materials in response to requests from other users or other libraries and may also be recruited to assist with new or ongoing special projects in various HSL departments and areas. Examples of past projects include assistance with weeding the collection (pulling books from shelves, cutting off covers, and recycling the remainder) and tasks within the archives (digitizing files, labelling slides, transcribing oral histories) to name a few.

Lyons students are instrumental in helping to provide quality service in the Centre for our users. Our students are the first point of contact and assist with general inquiries, room and equipment bookings, media related issues, and our 3D print service. Students will work on various media projects or design work and may help run workshops on various media topics. Knowledge or interest in areas such as video production and editing, audio production, DSLR cameras, VR, and 3D printing is beneficial for being successful in this role.

Makerspace students are vital contributors to a workflow that ensures health and safety, appropriate equipment usage, program development and implementation, successful daily operations, and they contribute work towards the success of alrger, long-term projects of Thode Makerspace

Works with the Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship to develop, maintain, and enhance its informational, training, and learning materials on a variety of web pages and platforms. Students will gain experience with website design and development, content creation, and information management.

The Research Data Management (RDM) Assistant supports the RDM team in developing resources for data management planning, data deposit, and other RDM needs. They conduct literature searches and environmental scans to inform our projects, create communications, and engage our growing community of practice. Takes part in the Scholars Portal metadata markup program and enhances the discoverability and usability of metadata for digital resources that can be accessed from the Odesi Data Portal

The Library data student assistant participates in projects that improve access to the library data resources for McMaster researchers, students, and community members.

DASH student assistants provide researchers in various disciplines support for data analysis as well as assistance with software applications for quantitative and qualitative analysis of data.

Library Student Assistants play a pivotal role in maintaining the library's unique cartographic collection. Responsibilities will include assisting patrons with accessing the collection, answering their questions, and participating in map-related projects that enhance understanding and insight into our extensive map collection. This position offers a valuable opportunity to engage with historical and contemporary cartographic materials while providing essential support to library users.

Student assistants in LAS convert course textbooks, Avenue reading, and research materials from the original format, often .pdf, into teh format that our students require (accessible pdf, mp3, Word, Braille, etc). While converting course materials, students monitor CATS (Campus Accessible Tech Space), ensuring that policies are upheld. Student assistants also circulate items from our AT Lending Library during their shifts. Students will alos work on projects that improve accessibility in the library, across campus, and the province. Working in LAS/CATS is a quiet but fast paced position that requires the independent work with minimal direction.

The Digitization Assistant digitizes pre-digital theses written by McMaster students and adds them to our institutional repository, MacShere. This involves the use of book scanners, image processing, PDF creation, and metadata management. Theses are made accessible and searchable with the creation of PDF Optical Character Recognition layers which may require careful manual editing for correctness. The Digitization Assistant may also assist in digitization projects to support Research Collections or Library Accessibility Services.
