The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy Online is on trial until December 24, 2004. REP Online expands the 10-volume print Enyclopedia (published in 1998) with a diverse range of new material, including newly commissioned entries by leading scholars, making REP Online the essential philosophy reference for faculty and students in a wide range of disciplines.

The International Philosophical Bibliography is also on trial, until January 31, 2005. The aim of the International Philosophical Bibliography is to list philosophical literature as such. Of the scientific disciplines related to philosophy, only the publications questioning the methods or the philosophy of these fields are included, together with publications of a general nature relating to the objects that they study.

New e-Journal Portal now available

The e-Journal Portal provides comprehensive access to all full text e-journals available at McMaster. The portal allows you to search for e-journals by title or ISSN - or to browse titles by subject. As such, the Portal provides an alternative access point for e-journals to the e-Resources Database maintained by the Library.

The Portal differs from the Library's e-Resources Database in several ways:

i) The Portal is limited to e-journals, whereas the e-Resources Database provides access to a broad range of products [e-books, e-data, etc.]

ii) The Portal includes all full-text e-journals, whereas the e-Resources Database does not include titles accessed through some of our large aggregator databases. For example, the Portal provides access to approximately 5,000 full text sources available through LexisNexis whereas the e-Resources Database only includes a small set of key sources.

iii) The Portal uses pre-defined subject headings (the same set of terms used in Ulrich's) whereas the e-Resources Database uses 122 locally-defined subject headings (selected by library staff for their relevance to the McMaster campus community).

iv) The Portal is a commercial product maintained by our vendor whereas the e-Resources Database is maintained by library staff.

The Library is currently investigating the future scope and direction of the e-Resources Database. If you have any comments regarding the eRD or our new e-Journal Portal, we'd love to hear them!

Changes to INSPEC (updated again)

Update #2: December 1st - INSPEC is now available. Until this gets catalogued in MORRIS, please consult the ERD record.

Effective December 1, 2004, INSPEC , the world's largest bibliographic database for searching topics in physics, electrical engineering and electronics, computers and control engineering, and information technology, will be available on the Engineering Village 2 platform.

INSPEC is no longer being offered through Axiom platform as the vendor, Institute of Physics, has ceased to offer this service.

Trials of INSPEC on several different platforms were held in April/May 2004 at all OCUL libraries including McMaster. Engineering Village 2 was selected by the majority of OCUL sites as it offered several features including: ease of access to all INSPEC search fields, intuitive navigation, bibliographic citation saving capabilities, an alerting and saved searches function and excellent online help.

By searching INSPEC via Engineering Village 2 , there is the added advantage of being able to cross-database search both INSPEC and Compendex (Engineering Index) for a more comprehensive search of a topic.

The Christmas Toy Drive will take place from Wednesday, November 17th to Wednesday, December 15th, 2004. This annual event is held in support of the Salvation Army's Christmas Bureau. The Bureau's mandate is to provide a new toy for children of families in need of assistance.

Toys are needed for boys and girls up to the age of twelve. Most-needed items include baby toys, colouring books, family games, books and Lego blocks.

Over the years, the McMaster Community has generously supported this worthy cause, and we hope that you will contine to do so this year.

Why not start a collection box in your office, residence, department or work area and then drop them off at the nearest campus library.

Collection boxes will be placed in Mills, Innis, Thode and Health Sciences libraries.

Your support is greatly appreciated.
