Fonds Description

United Glass and Ceramic Workers of North America (Canada) fonds

Section I - Correspondence Between District Six Headquarters and the Local Unions

Section I consists of correspondence between District Six headquarters in Hamilton (the headquarters were transferred to Toronto in 1966) and the various Canadian local unions in Ontario, Quebec and the Western Provinces. When received, this material was in several chronological sequences and it has been reorganized so that all the material for any given local may be found together in chronological order. The material for locals 200 (box 1), 206 (box 10), 235 (boxes 20-24) and 237 (boxes 26 and 27) dates from the 1940s, and that from most other locals commences during the 1950s. The terminal date for most of the local union correspondence is 1972. Organizational and certification matters dominate the early material of most locals while in later years the subject matter becomes more varied, ranging from policy recommendations to Christmas party invitations as well as the omnipresent contract negotiations.

Section II - Correspondence - General

The section comprises correspondence from various sources. The chronological series (boxes 42-48) covers an almost uninterrupted period from 1954 to 1967. It comprises copies of all correspondence from the District Six office, most of it the work of President Oliver Hodges from the time the office was set up in 1954 until his resignation in 1965 when James Perna took over this position. Hodges resigned in an unsuccessful bid to win the position of International First Vice President.

As well as the daily chronological files from 1954 to 1959 (there is a gap between January-July 1956), this section includes the earliest extant records of the Hamilton glass workers, the per capita accounts of the Hamilton local of the National Union of Vitric and Ceramic Workers, 1952 to 1954 (box 42).

Correspondence from officers of the International Headquarters, President Burl Phares, Vice Presidents Lelland Beard, Everett Kanatzar and H. Wayne Yarman reflects changes in the officers of the union (boxes 50 & 51). The files of Secretary-Treasurer Lewis McCracken are particularly informative regarding the close financial ties between the District Six office and the Ohio headquarters (boxes 49 & 50). More detailed information regarding the growth of the union within Canada may be obtained from the correspondence of the various international representatives assigned to District Six, Messmer and Toole in the Western region and Charles Devlin in Quebec; Messmer’s “progress reports” to Oliver Hodges are particularly lengthy and detailed (box 51).

The balance of Section II comprises correspondence to and from various groups; that concerned with the Canadian Labour Congress and the Ontario Federation of Labour is the most substantial (boxes 52 & 53). Purely financial correspondence emanating from the international, regional and local levels has been kept together (box 54), as received, although the researcher may locate more material of a similar nature in the files of the individual local unions as well as in the section relating to the international Secretary-Treasurer Lewis McCracken. Also, the annual bowling tournaments sponsored by District Six have generated fairly substantial correspondence files. These specific groupings aside, the general correspondence has been arranged alphabetically in box 55.
