Johnson, Samuel, 1707-1784

F.1 Autograph letter, signed, from Samuel Johnson to Mrs. Thrale, dated June 10, 1780, 2p. The letter concerns the so-called Gordon Riot, an anti-Papist uprising which had convulsed the City of London for almost a week.

F.2 Copper token. According to Boswell, in his Life of Dr. Johnson, "there are copper plates struck at Birmingham with his head impressed upon them which pass current for halfpence there, and in the neighbouring parts of the country". This example, which was issued ca. 1792, is as follows:
Obverse: Bust of Johnson, facing to the right, wearing a wig and showing the upper part of the coat, a small ornament below the bust.
Reverse: Three lions rampant. Inscription: Promisssory Halfpenny Payable At
Edge: Inscription: Birmingham, W. Hampton or Litchfield.
