Peace Brigades International

Peace Brigades International fonds. -- 1972-2001; predominant 1981-2002. -- 26.3 m of textual records, graphic material and moving images. -- 122 computer disks.

Peace Brigades International was founded in Canada on 4 September 1981. Peace workers from Europe, Canada, United States and India met at Grindstone Island and issued a founding statement which read in part "[We] will undertake nonpartisan missions which may include peacemaking initiatives, peacekeeping under a discipline of nonviolence, and humanitarian service."

The fonds consists of administrative records: correspondence, minutes, reports, circulars, news letters and published materials. There have been nine accruals and one addendum. The first accrual, 66 cm, has been integrated into the second accrual, making a single chronological series. The third accrual, 3.6 m, is also arranged in a single chronological series. The fourth accrual, 3.2 m, which contains records from the Guatemala office, is arranged into the following series: I Oficina del Proyecto (not received); II Comité del Proyectos; III Equipo de Guatemala; IV Publicaciones. The fifth accrual, 1 m, which has administrative records from the London office, is arranged chronologically within topical sections. The sixth accrual, 12.5 cm, contains records from the American office. The seventh accrual, 4.5 m, consists of files of the Balkan Peace Team (Boxes 42-43); PBI Projet de Haiti (Boxes 44-49); Sri Lanka Project (Boxes 50, 53-60); Guatemala Project (Box 51); International Office PBI--General (Box 52). The seventh accrual also has an addendum, containing material related to the Sri Lanka Project and to International Office PBI--General. The eighth accrual, 9.5 m, contains files of the North American Project, PBI Canada, PBI Guatemala, PBI El Salvador and PBI Central America. The ninth accrual contains the files of Liam Mahony.

The first accrual was acquired in 1991; second accrual in 1995; third accrual in 1997; the fourth (12-1999) and fifth (28-1999) accruals in 1999; the sixth accrual sometime between 1999 and 2004; the seventh (30-2004) in 2004; the eighth (16-2006) in May 2006; the ninth (63-2009) in September 2009, all from Peace Brigades International.
