Dorset, Thomas Sackville, Earl of, 1536-1608

Thomas Sackville was born in 1536 at Buckhurst, Surrey and perhaps educated at Hart Hall, Oxford and St. John's College, Cambridge. He became a barrister in the Inner Temple and a member of parliament, 1558-1563. In 1567 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Buckhurst, and in 1608 was created Earl of Dorset. He served as an ambassador and then lord treasurer from 1599 until his death at his desk in Whitehall, London, 19 April 1608. Sackville was also an accomplished poet.

Manuscript 93.

Sacvyles olde age. -- [after 1574]. -- Manuscript, 10 p. -- Fair copy in unknown hand.

Monies received from individuals and monies paid to individuals at various times between 1653 and 1656. -- [after 1656]. -- Manuscript, 5 p. -- In a second hand.

Compilation of account rolls, probably from the manors of Trembleth and Wynnyanton from 1457 to 1532, with 1521-1532 predominant. -- [after 1549]. -- Manuscript, 2 p. -- In a third hand.

All three manuscripts are bound into one volume. The binding has been dated to 1549. The volume was presumably acquired as a bound, blank book in which the three manuscripts were written at different times. Manuscript has been boxed with "Sackvyle's Olde Age" stamped on spine by a McMaster preservationist.

Manuscript was purchased as part of lot 305 in the sale by Phillips, London, 18 September 1986, where it is described as one of several other properties.
A detailed description of the manuscripts as well as the text of the poem appears in Rivkah Zim and M. B. Parkes, "`Sacvyles Olde Age' A Newly Discovered Poem by Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, Earl of Dorset (c.1536-1608)", The Review of English Studies 60, no. 157 (Feb. 1989): 1-25, a copy of which is in the master file, Thomas Sackville.
