Exposition missionnaire du IIIe centennaire de Montréal

Montréal tricentenary collection. – 1942. – 1 item.

The tricentenary of the founding of Montréal was celebrated in 1942 at Oratoire Saint du Mont-Royal (Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal). A committee was organized to celebrate the occasion with an “Exposition missionaire”. A globe of the world was hung from the ceiling and displays were set up. The only words visible on the globe are: “allez, enseignez” (go, teach). The displays included depictions of the founding of Montreal as well as missionary ventures in many countries around the globe including Canada (James Bay). It is estimated about 500,000 people attended the exposition.

The collection consists of an album of b&w photographs taken inside and outside the Oratory The album, bound in leather, was inscribed and presented to Adhémar Raynault, the mayor of Montreal by the committee. The photographs were taken by F.E. Marsan.
