Mamiya, Michio, 1929- Letter to Anne Brydon / by Michio Mamiya. -- 12 February 1980. -- 15 p. -- Enclosure of typescript, 4 p., containing biographical information on Mamiya and a list of his compositions. Michio Mamiya was born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, on 29 June 1929. He was taught by both Hiroshi Tamura in piano and Tomojioro Ikenouchi in composition. A particular interest of his has been Japanese folk music. Thoroughly familiar with both European music as well as traditional Japanese music, he has tried to synthesise these forms of music in his compositions. In 1980 Anne Brydon was a fourth year undergraduate music student, registered at the University of Western Ontario but studying as a transfer student at the University of British Columbia. In reply to a set of questions that she sent to Mamiya, she received this detailed letter in which he comments in English on the personal and intellectual influences in his music. She had wanted to write a term paper on Mamiya for a course on Japanese music but his response to her letter arrived too late. Title is based on content of item.
