Levenson, Christopher, 1934-

Christopher Levenson - poet, translator, editor, and professor of English
and creative writing - was born in London, England in 1934. He lived in
the Netherlands, Germany and the United States before moving to Canada
in 1968. His first book of poetry, In Transit was included in New
Poets(1959). In 1960 he was the first recipient of the Eric Gregory
Award. He was co-founder and editor of Arc magazine, and from 1981
to 1991 founded and organized the Arc reading series in Ottawa. Since
living in Canada, he has published many articles and books of poetry.
He has published two volumes of translations from seventeenth-century
Dutch poetry and individual verse translations in European journals. He
taught English and creative writing at Carleton University and was Series
Editor of Harbinger Poets, an imprint of Carleton University Press, devoted
exclusively to first books of Canadian poetry. He was for a year Poetry
Editor of the Literary Review of Canada. He moved in Vancouver
in 2007.
There have been five accruals. The first accrual consists of: manuscripts
and typescripts of some published works; literary correspondence; and
typescripts and related correspondence pertaining to specific poetry.
It is divided into two series: manuscripts and typescripts; and literary
correspondence, which is divided into two subseries (correspondence relating
to individual poetry books; and general literary correspondence). The
second accrual consists correspondence and manuscripts arranged into three
series: Harbinger Poetry, the Literary Review of Canada and Levenson's
collected poems. The third accrual consists of four series: collected
poems; manuscripts and typescripts; other literary activities; correspondence.
The fourth accrual consists of four series: manuscripts, collected poems,
sound recording, personal and literary correspondence. The fifth accrual
consists of three series: writings, correspondence, and other work.
Title based on contents of fonds.
First accrual (27-1998) was acquired in November 1998; second accrual
(02-2002) in January 2002; the third accrual (09-2007, 21-2007 and 22-2007)
in various instalments between May to July 2007; fourth accrual (10-2008
and 26-2009) in 2008 and 2009; fifth accrual (02-2011) in 2011, all from
Christopher Levenson.
