Historical Notes

After the war of 1812 Chippawa, having been served by itinerant ministers in earlier years, became part of a new mission, the centre of which was Ancaster. In 1820 the Rev. William Leeming was appointed rector of the mission which also included Stamford and Grimsby. According to the report of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, a grant of 100 Pounds was made in 1822 to aid in erecting a church in Chippawa. Rev. Leeming continued to serve the parish of Chippawa and Stamford until his death in 1863. The original frame church was burned by Mackenzie's rebels in September 1839 and the foundation stone for the present one was laid by Bishop Strachan in 1841. (For further historical information - see Parish Register L) (See also Church History in filing cabinet)

Note: The entries for baptisms, marriages and burials in the first three registers are somewhat irregular and, most particularly when using Parish Register B, the researcher is cautioned to search every page of the book and also the loose material included with it.

Baptisms, Marriages and Burials,
May 1828(?)-September 1853.
These entries were all copied into the register in 1886 and have not been carefully recorded; Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials are all interspersed and frequently important information is missing. The 1828 date of what appears to be the earliest entry may be an error for 1838 and if it is, then the entries commence in September 1834. There is some duplication of the entries in Parish Register A (e.g. the entry numbered "21" in Register B, the Morrison baptism of 1835 may be found in Register A).
Baptisms 1845 and 1851
Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1848-1850.
These entries may be found on loose pages which were formerly inside the front cover of Register A. The 1848-50 entries cover 8 sides of paper and appear to be in the
Rev. Leeming's hand.
