Historical Notes

Services of worship in Aldershot began on May 20, 1860, in the old schoolhouse, being held every two weeks, conducted by clergy from St. Luke's, Burlington and from parishes in Hamilton.

When the Diocese of Niagara was formed in 1875, St. Matthew's was joined with Waterdown, a connection which lasted for 53 years. However, there do not appear to be any Aldershot entries in the Waterdown registers currently at McMaster.

In the 1920s Aldershot was separated from Waterdown and Lay Readers had charge for a few years until it was joined with Hamilton Beach in 1927.

In 1947 a new era began when St. Andrew's, Hamilton Beach and St. Matthew's were separated and the Reverend W.J.B. Meloche was appointed Rector of St. Matthew's.

Note: Historical Booklets: A Brief History of St. Matthew's Church, Aldershot, 90th Anniversary 1861-1951; and One Hundred Years, The Church of St. Matthew-on-the-Plains, 1861-1961; give a fairly comprehensive history of the Parish. (In filing cabinet)
