St. Mark's Anglican Church (Orangeville, Ont.) fonds. -- 1850-1984. -- 73 cm of textual records.
Seneca Ketchum came to the township of Mono in 1830 as a missionary. In 1837 he built a log church. As time passed, the need for a much larger church became pressing. Rev. John Fletcher built the second St. Mark's, a small stone church, in a different location near Orangeville in 1854. In 1868 the congregation decided to build a new church on the same site. For a more complete history see the pamphlet Saint Mark's Anglican Church History, 1837-1967.
The fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records, services, Vestry, Advisory Board, Parish Guild and Women's Auxiliary minutes and financial registers and other documents. Most of the fonds has been microfilmed on 5 reels, numbered 241-245.

Guide To Records Of St. Mark's Anglican Church (S/W #575-576)
Historical Notes
In 1837, the year the young Queen Victoria ascended the throne of England, a small pine log church was built by a missionary-minded Anglican Churchman, Seneca Ketchum. It stood in a clearing in Mono Township about a mile east of Orangeville town site was but a tract of bushland broken by a few trails, and with only a handful of scattered settlers.
Seneca Ketchum and his brother, Jesse, had come from the State of New York to Cataraqui (Kingston, Ontario) with the Reverend John Stuart to help him establish the Anglican Church there. From there they came with their Rector to build St. James' Church in Toronto, of which both brothers were staunch members. Disappointment with his inability to complete studies and take Holy Orders did not deter Seneca Ketchum from organizing services in the surrounding district, starting off before daylight on Sunday mornings to go to Thornhill, Markham and other places. His dream was to build a church every few miles.
In 1823 Mr. Ketchum purchased 200 acres of land in and near what was later to be the town of Orangeville. In 1830 Bishop Strachan licensed him as Missionary of the Township of Mono. When he moved to Mono he brought several families with him, to whom he gave separate houses on his farm and provided work for them on his land.
Mr. Ketchum kept pressing the Bishop for a resident Minister for Mono, but it was not until 1850 that the Reverend John Fletcher was appointed to serve in Mono, Mulmur, Adjala and at St. Mark's. The Rectory was in Melville. His successor was the Reverend L. VanLinge who resided in Mono. In 1854 a small stone church, at the site of the present church, was built on land given by Jesse Ketchum. In 1861 the Reverend Canon Alexander Henderson became Rector, the first to reside in Orangeville.
The present church building was erected in 1868. When, in 1875 the Diocese of Niagara was separated from the Diocese of Toronto, Orangeville was included in the new Diocese.
