McMaster University Library Map Collection has historical maps of Hamilton, modern city street maps, topographic maps, some neighbourhood plans. See the class display or ask staff for assistance.

Fire Insurance Plans: plans dated 1898 & 1911 can be viewed online. Plans dated 1947 & 1964 are still restricted by copyright and must be viewed in hard copy format in the Map Collection.
Legends to the symbols used on all plans can also be located online.

Hamilton Public Library has an excellent collection of books about local history (HPL, Local History & Archives Dept.)

City Directories show what person or what business was located at an address in a specific year. McMaster Library has the following city directories for the City of Hamilton:

  • Current issue (2013-2014) is kept in Mills Quick Reference (Mills 2nd floor) and Thode Quick Reference (Thode Library)
  • 1853 to 1996 is on microfilm in the Map Collection
  • 1997-2011 paper copies in the Map Collection

Journals

Scholarly journals are less likely to publish articles about local neighbourhood issues but might provide information on certain topics relating to the history of Hamilton. To investigate what might be available in scholarly journals, try Journals @ Scholars Portal.

Popular press journals (such as Macleans, Toronto Life and Hamilton Magazine) are more likely to publish articles about local issues than scholarly journals. To find popular press articles, try these indexes:
