2026-27 Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant recipients announced

Six projects from McMaster faculty and staff are being funded through the grant program.

McMaster University faculty and staff members are receiving grants to support projects that will foster the creation and integration of free, high-quality open textbooks and course materials to improve teaching and learning.  

The McMaster Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant Program is supported by the Office of the Provost, McMaster University Libraries, McMaster Students Union, and the MacPherson Institute. It provides successful applicants with funding to create new OER or to adopt, adapt or customize existing OER. Many of these OER projects lead to significant cost savings for students. The program also offers an honorarium for instructors to peer review existing OER.  

The 2026-27 grants will support six projects.  

The following lead faculty and staff members, and their corresponding projects, will be supported as they build and integrate OER into their teaching in the coming year:  

  • Sara Bannerman, professor, Communication Studies and Media Arts, Faculty of Humanities.
    Open Content Creation: Canadian Communication Policy and Law, second edition   
     
  • Derya Bozdogan, instructional assistant, MELD program, Faculty of Humanities.
    Open Content Peer Review: Putting the Pieces Together: Reason and Writing for Success   
     
  • Monica De Paoli, assistant professor, and Felicia Vulcu, associate professor, Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences.  
    Open Content Creation: Learning Unlocked: A Learner's Interactive Guide to Active Learning Experiences 
     
  • Jordan Lentinello, instructor, Honours Health Science Program, Faculty of Health Sciences.  
    Open Content Creation: From Classroom to Community: An Undergraduate Workbook for Community-Based Research  
     
  • Karen Robson, professor, Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences.
    Open Content Creation: Updating and Expanding the Sociology of Education in Canada Textbook   
     
  • Michael Welland, associate professor, Engineering Physics, Faculty of Engineering
    Open Content Creation: Enhancing Experiential Learning through Digital Tool Deployment
