The ArcView coverages were created by students Jennifer Hayman and
Brent Whetstone for their undergraduate thesis, based on Hamilton
street maps and land use maps from various time periods.

Description:
- Land use coverages for the City of Hamilton, for eight different years:
1837, 1858, 1875, 1920, 1950, 1970, 1980, 1999.
The land use coverage for each year is accompanied by shapefiles
for the City boundary, roads and rail networks, shoreline and escarpment
at that time.

- There is no formal metadata for these coverages.
A description of the process used in creating the coverages can be
found in the thesis: Jennifer Hayman and Brent Whetstone, "Land-Use
Change in Hamilton, Ontario, Using GIS", McMaster University School
of Geography and Geology, April 2000.
A 1999 street map was used to create the original city grid. Roads
were deleted from this base to create the grids for earlier years.
Land use information was taken from street maps, fire insurance plans,
and from land use maps created by the City of Hamilton Planning Department
and by other authors.
