Series contains chapbooks from 102 small presses, predominantly in the Southern Ontario region. Presses which are heavily represented include above/ground press (Ottawa), Proper Tales Press (Toronto), and Serif of Nottingham (Hamilton). In addition, the series contains a small selection of self-published chapbooks.
above/ground press, Proper Tales Press, No Press, and CURVD H&z are some of the most influential chapbook producers in the region. above/ground press, located in Ottawa and operated by Rob McLennan, has been active since 1993. Its aim is to produce and distribute relatively inexpensive chapbooks from Canadian poets. Proper Tales Press has been active in Toronto since 1979; its founder, Stuart Ross, also publishes chapbooks, pamphlets, and small magazines which are relatively inexpensive. No Press, established in Calgary and subsequently Banff, was founded in 2005 by Derek Bealieu and operates with a similar mandate. CURVD H&z is published by John W. Curry, also known as jwcurry, and has been operative in Toronto since 1978.
Chapbooks emerging from the presses mentioned above are testament to an avant-garde aesthetic which is at odds with the institutional practices of large publishers. Chapbooks are produced in limited print runs of usually 50-200; many feature inexpensive paper and are printed via laser, inkjet, or rubber stamp. Most are stapled or hand stitched. Prices are sometimes satiric (see jwcurry’s “1 cent” series, which recalls the one-penny British chapbooks of the sixteenth to early nineteenth centuries) and are always lower than a typical trade paperback.
The series attests to a wide range of print practices. Other chapbooks are printed via letterpress, photocopy, woodcut, serigraph, or offset methods. Volumes typically have between eight to thirty-six pages. The content of the chapbooks is predominantly poetry from Canadian writers, with significant inclusions of concrete and visual poetry, though some prose is also present.
The series is arranged alphabetically by small press. Within each small press listing, items are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
The abbreviations ‘n.p.’ and ‘n.d.’ are used throughout to indicate no publication location and no date, respectively.

Series 3
Broadsides, Pamphlets, and Postcards. – 1978-2020. – 250 items (16.25 cm of textual records).
Series contains broadsides, pamphlets, and postcards from 46 small presses, predominantly in the Southern Ontario region. Presses which are heavily represented include CURVD H&z (including the 1CENT series, listed separately); above/ground press, No Press, Proper Tales Press, and Paper Kite Press. See series 1 for further descriptions of the mandates of these presses.
Broadsides in the series are single-sheet publications, usually featuring a single poem or visual motif. Pamphlets are two-page items, typically a folded 8.5 x 11” sheet. Some pamphlets are 8.5 x 11” sheets folded twice, yielding tri-fold brochures. Postcards are small, single-sheet items.
In keeping with items in series 1, most of the items in this series were produced on inexpensive papers and with laser, inkjet, or rubber stamp printing methods.
The series is arranged alphabetically by small press. Within each small press listing, items are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
The abbreviations ‘n.p.’ and ‘n.d.’ are used throughout to indicate no publication location and no date, respectively.
