St. Mark's Anglican Church (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) fonds. – 1792-1991. – 2.8 m of textual records.
St. Mark's Church, Niagara-on-the-Lake, is the oldest Anglican community in the Diocese of Niagara and is the oldest continuously used church west of Quebec. It was established by the first resident missionary of Niagara, Rev. Robert Addison, in 1792. The church, completed as early as 1794 and no later than 1804, was damaged by fire during the War of 1812 and was subsequently restored.
Fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records for the military garrison at Fort George and Queenston as well as St. Mark's, vestry minute books, account books, land and cemetery deeds, memoranda and financial records. The fonds has been microfilmed on 4 reels, numbered 337-339 and 398.
Title based on content of fonds.
Fonds on deposit. Ownership of the fonds resides with St. Mark's Church.
Finding aid available in hard copy and electronically. In addition to the finding aids shown here, there are two hard copy finding aids prepared by the parish in 1997 available in the master file.
Researchers are requested to use the microfilms. They must also sign an agreement of use form.
Further accruals are expected.

Box 1 | Notes concerning baptisms, marriages and burials; also marriage licences. This material appears to duplicate entries already contained in the early parish registers.

|
Note: It appears that some time in the 1950s or 1960s, most of the fragmentary notes concerning baptisms, marriages and burials were placed in envelopes and the contents noted on the outside. In some cases the fragments have now disappeared or completely disintegrated -- in other cases they are still extant but are so fragile as to be unusable. The notes on the envelopes appear to accurately reflect the contents of the fragments, so they have been preserved as a substitute for the lost or damaged originals. These records appear also to be duplicated in the Parish Registers but they have not all been crossed checked. Envelopes of fragments should not be opened without consultation with the archivist.

Box 2 | Marriage Licenses
Note: regarding Marriage Licenses. Although these are not, strictly speaking, Church records, being issued by successive Lieutenant Governors of Upper Canada, since they all relate to the town of Niagara and, presumably, to weddings which took place at St. Mark's or one of the miliary garrisons, they have been listed in chronological sequence here. They have not been crossed-checked against the Parish Registers.
