Fonds - Brief Description

St. George's Anglican Church (Guelph, Ont.) fonds. -- 1832-1975. -- 1.2 m of textual records.

Rev. Arthur Palmer was appointed rector for Guelph in 1832. In the spring of 1833 a wooden church was built in St. George's Square. This church was replaced with a stone one with the corner stone being laid in July 1851. In April 1873 a third church was built on Woolwich Street. It was consecrated in 1879. The fonds consists of parish registers containing statistical records, services, Vestry, Parish Council and Young People's Association minutes and Sunday School records, financial registers, correspondence, legal and other documents. Most of the fonds has been microfilmed on 6 reels of microfilm, numbered 154-157, 284-285.

Historical Notes

The Reverend John Miller of Ancaster visited Guelph at the request of the congregation and of the Bishop of Quebec in July of 1831 and baptised twenty children in the school house. The area did not acquire its own rector until the Reverend Arthur Palmer arrived from Ireland in September 1832. In the spring of 1833 the first wooden church was opened for worship in St. George's Square. Lands for the building of a rectory were granted in 1836 but the house was rented out as it was too far distant from the church.

The corner stone of the new stone church, built upon the same site as the original St. George's was laid in July 1851 and in 1856 a new stone rectory was erected by Reverend Palmer. In April 1873 the third St. George's was opened on Woolwich Street. Having closely supervised the building of the new church Reverend Palmer resigned his position as rector and retired to England in 1875. The new church was consecrated in 1879 and also in this year a new rectory was completed. With the growth in the Anglican population of Guelph it was decided to divide the parish and the first meeting in connection with the new St. James' Parish was held in March, 1890. A further division took place in 1925 when part of the area formerly administered by St. George's received its own church, St. Patrick's.
