The neighbourhood profiles were developed to help government and community agencies with their local planning, by providing socio-economic data at a meaningful geographic area. The boundaries of these social planning neighbourhoods do not change over time, allowing researchers to perform longitudinal studies see the changes in each area. Not all people define neighbourhoods the same way, but for the purposes of statistical reporting, these neighbourhoods were defined based on Statistics Canada census tracts.

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) launched a new internet based data service for the global user community. It brings UN statistical databases within easy reach of users through a single entry point (http://data.un.org/). Users can now search and download a variety of statistical resources of the UN system.

Useful features like Country Profiles, Advanced Search and Glossaries are also provided to aid research. The numerous databases, tables and glossaries containing over 60 million data points cover a wide range of themes including Agriculture, Crime, Education, Employment, Energy, Environment, Health, HIV/AIDS, Human Development, Industry, Information and Communication Technology, National Accounts, Population, Refugees, Tourism, Trade, as well as the Millennium Development Goals indicators.

The Urban Aboriginal Peoples Study (“UAPS”) is an innovative research study conducted with First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples living in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Ottawa (Inuit only). It seeks to better understand and document the identities, experiences, values and aspirations of urban Aboriginal Canadians.

The UAPS is conducted by Environics Institute for Survey Research. Established in 2006, it sponsors relevant and original public opinion and social values research related to issues of public policy and social change.
