The 2016 Census of Population collects data for the total population of Canada. As the amount of data gathered increases, data visualizations have been introduced to help people, business owners, academics, and management at all levels, understand key information derived from the data. Data visualizations can be used to quickly communicate a message, to simplify the presentation of large amounts of data, to see data patterns and relationships, and to monitor changes in variables over time.

The present study provides estimates of the economic and social costs of firearm-related crime in Canada. In this study, firearm-related crime is defined as crime committed with a firearm present or used during the commission of an offence, of which all are considered violent crimes. The impact of firearm-related crime can be both wide-ranging and long-lasting as it directs a society's resources to address the problem and causes unquantifiable pain and suffering to victims and their family members. Examining the financial impact is not a new approach in understanding crime. An understanding of the economic costs of crime can lead to important insights and policy decisions, both in terms of criminal justice policy and in terms of other social problems that compete with crime for government funding and resources.

In 2011, GlobalNews.ca dramatically increased the number of requests made across Canada under Freedom of Information laws.

Moving forward, we will be releasing more articles and interactive features based on analysis of this data. We see this type of journalism as an important public service. So we're happy to confirm that we're 'open-sourcing' the data used to create our reports. As much as possible, one to two days after publication, we'll make the datasets we used available here.

The minimum wage is a basic labour standard that sets the lowest wage rate that an employer can pay to employees. One of the main purposes of a minimum wage is to protect non-unionized workers in unskilled jobs, although it can also influence, directly or indirectly, the level of compensation of other employees. This is because a minimum wage constitutes a base that employees or their unions may use as a starting point for negotiations with management for higher remuneration. Adjustments to the minimum wage are required from time to time to account for changing economic and social conditions.

A jointly funded project between the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) and OntarioBuys provides university researchers with access to datasets in a web-based data extraction system delivered through the Scholars Portal model. The project targets Statistics Canada datasets, datafiles from Gallup Canada and other polling companies, public-domain files such as the Canadian National Election Surveys and selected files from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The files are marked-up using DDI, an international, XML-based metadata tagging system which allows data resource discovery, distributed access, extraction and analysis ... researchers working with opinion polls will be able to search across hundreds of datasets and collections to see trends and historical patterns over time"--summarized from the project page.
