American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld; Book deals with teen-age sex, dying young, abortion, blackmail, marriage
Ever wondered why Laura married George Bush and stayed married to him? Couldn’t be as easy as opposites attract could it? Don’t care about the Bushes and never want to hear about them again? It really doesn’t matter — Curtis Sittenfeld’s American Wife can stand nicely on its own. The Bushes become Alice and Charlie Blackwell from Wisconsin in the novel. The author follows Laura / Alice’s life from a teenager to the White House — although most of the novel takes place long before her White House days. This is a big, juicy book that takes on subjects like dying young, abortion, lies, betrayals, and blackmail on a very personal level — long before those issues become political. It’s a page-turner, well-written, and a good novel to take to the beach. It will be difficult to put down though. A fascinating portrayal of a woman’s life. Available in paperback.
